Choosing the Best Temperature Process Controller for Your Application

Temperature Process Control SystemWhen upgrading process controls, it is imperative that you determine the full capability and functionality of the instrument that will be controlling your process. Conrad Kacsik’s engineering team has installed thousands of temperature process controllers and upgraded hundreds of complete control systems. We’ll take the time to understand your temperature process control system, needs and expectations to ensure you get the results you want without overpaying for features you don’t need.

Determining Your Needs

Conrad Kacsik has been working with temperature process controllers and instrumentation for more than five decades. We’ll help you understand the pros and cons of various options to deliver a controller or control system that not only meets current requirements but can serve you well if your needs grow and evolve.

The most important determining factor between a basic, less-expensive controller and a more robust device is the number of tasks you need it to perform. If your system is fairly small and simple, and its primary purpose is temperature control, a more basic modern process controller will handle the workload, and typically offer additional features and benefits.

Larger and more complex temperature process control systems are better served by a more capable process controller. More advanced process controllers are modular and can easily grow as your needs change. It can even replace other devices such as chart recorders because it will have built-in data collection functionality.

Upgrading a temperature process controller is a great idea when other equipment is becoming obsolete. The Conrad Kacsik team can perform a comprehensive upgrade to bring your whole system up to date while delivering a number of advanced features like:

  • Internet connectivity to allow remote operation, tracking and accessing of data in addition to remote diagnostics and troubleshooting
  • The most precise temperature and process control available
  • Automatic settings preprogrammed by the Conrad Kacsik team
  • Recipe Management Capability—guaranteeing consistent, high-quality results
  • On-board data logging within the controller itself, which automatically collects and stores data as a backup—a great way to protect against PC failures

Temperature Process Controller Options

Conrad Kacsik can engineer a custom solution with any brand of process controller on the market, and we’ll source either your preferred device or the one best suited to your needs. We most frequently use what we see as two of the best choices on the market—the Watlow F4T and the Honeywell HC900. Both are very capable units that work with SpecView software and offer remarkable performance.

The Watlow F4T is an integrated temperature process controller that can be configured in countless ways to work with a wide variety of equipment and applications. Its graphical touch panel makes it intuitive and easy to operate. The F4T offers a wide range of field removable I/O modules for maximum design flexibility and can be configured to include data logging capabilities. Combining power, flexibility and functionality, it’s a versatile device that can meet many temperature process control needs.

The Honeywell HC900 is a process and safety controller with significant capabilities. It offers outstanding PID loop control and processing, and its modular and scalable design smoothly integrates with a broad array of process equipment. It also has an easy-to-use touchscreen operator interface. The process and safety controller possesses a flexible architecture that can accommodate the most demanding application. The HC900 is a great choice for larger needs. It can handle virtually any thermal control need for any industry, including critical controls and safety integration level (SIL2) demands.

Whichever process control device you select, it will come standard with internet communications and can be integrated with SpecView supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) software to make data collection and analysis simple.
